Level 90 and Apocalypse: the complete preparation guide
SEA's world level opened to 90 on 3 October, and Calamity Zone Season 1 with Apocalypse Star gear comes next, still without a date. Taiwan finished that season months ago, so we use its lessons: reaching 90 fast, the gear to get first, red special skills, how Apocalypse works, the five bosses and their Break and Guard targets, and the weapon trait for every build.as of 2026-10-10 (SEA)Divine ForgeCalamity ZoneApocalypse StarOur take
The RO New World team's own view
- This is the page to keep open from level 88 until Calamity Zone opens. If you are below 85, read only the gear-saving parts: stop selling orange gear and Royal (red) gear, and come back later.
- Our order: reach 90 without wasting Time Corridor runs, get a level 90 weapon, then save Royal gear level 70 and up for Apocalypse instead of turning it into crystals. Red special skills come last, and only if you can reach red level 2.
- The trap we see most is feeding the Divine Forge first. A Royal level 80 piece is worth 8 Divine Crystals, but on Taiwan it is worth 250 Apocalypse tier points, and crystals can be bought from weekly shops. Apocalypse is the bigger damage jump for the same gear.
- Verdict: F2P players should treat October as a saving month: gear for Apocalypse, crystals from the weekly shops, refining during the festival, Guard before Break. Spenders can roll red skills now, but should pick their class first, because a red skill rarely survives a class change.
Where SEA stands (10 October)
- The world level cap moved from 88 to 90 on the morning of 3 October, without a maintenance notice. The fastest players reached 90 on 9 and 10 October; most expect to get there on 11 or 12 October.
- The next world level unlock is about a month away. Players quote both 93 and 98 as the next cap, so treat that number as unknown for now.
- Calamity Zone Season 1 and Apocalypse Star were announced on 8 and 9 October as coming soon, with no date. Calamity Zone needs world level 85, which SEA already has, and Base Lv.90. On Taiwan, Season 1 opened one week after level 90 gear arrived, so SEA could be close, but an 11 October start is still a rumour until the official site confirms it.
- Known bug: until 9 October, Time Rift gave level 80 gear to characters at level 88 or above. It is fixed, and the missing chests arrive by mail with the next version update.
- The Taiwan and Hong Kong version of the game (RO仙境傳說:世界之旅, same publisher) ran Season 1 from April to July 2026 and is now in Season 2. The SEA notice is almost a word-for-word translation of Taiwan's Season 1 notes, so we use Taiwan's experience throughout and mark those numbers as Taiwan.
From 88 to 90 without wasting days
- Quest at 88 rather than 89 where you can. The experience penalty above world level is about 20% at 88 and 25 to 30% at 89.
- Do not spend your Time Corridor runs on the day before you hit 88. Unused runs carry over, so you get 4 the next day. The same trick works before 48, 58, 68 and 78.
- From 88, the random Time Corridor instance (level 65, Hard) drops level 90 gear and level 90 Royal Essence. Time Echoes drops level 90 essence too.
- Fill your 300 assist points every day, and keep Legend Cup, Wonder Tour and pass points for level 90 Royal Essence.
- Hold off on big refines. The Lucky Refinement Festival arrives in October, and refining during it also completes its tasks and fills Lucky Energy.
Level 90 gear: what to get first
- In the game files, level 90 gear is a weapon and two accessories at level 90, armor and cape at 91, and shoes and off-hand at 92, each in blue, purple, gold and Royal grades.
- Get a level 90 weapon first; it is the largest single upgrade at the cap. On Taiwan a level 90 Royal weapon is only about 35 ATK and 2% skill multiplier ahead of level 80 Royal, while activating Apocalypse on the weapon slot adds about 110 ATK. Plan for Apocalypse before you chase Royal.
- Taiwan's free-player order, which we agree with: a level 80 or better Royal weapon with your class trait first, then a level 90 orange weapon with the trait, then Royal gear with Apocalypse active, then level 90 orange with Apocalypse active.
- Armor, cape and shoes come as 3-piece sets. General Set II (STR +5, DEX +5, PDMG +2.5%) for physical damage, Angel Set II (INT +5, DEX +5, MDMG +2.5%) for magic damage, Odin Set III (STR +6, INT +6, ATK +2%, M.ATK +2%) for hybrids.
- Goibne Set III (Wind, Earth, Water and Fire skill damage taken -5%, VIT +6, Max HP +800, P.DEF +20) is our pick for tanks. Gale Set IV (HP cap +5%, P.DMG +2%) suits melee bruisers, Sprint Set IV (SP cap +5%, M.DMG +2%) casters who run dry, and Elemental Set IV (element skill damage taken -5%, Max HP +3%) supports who need to live.
- Level 90 Royal Essence shop: random gear chest 150, choose-an-armor chest 200 (once per account), choose-a-weapon chest 270 (once per account), choose weapon or armor 300 (repeatable). 10 level 80 essence turn into 1 level 90 essence.
- A level 90 Royal weapon takes more than 200 level 90 essence. If you are far from that, 120 level 80 essence for a level 80 Royal box is worth considering: the box becomes Apocalypse feed.
- Buy your weekly level 70 and 80 molds before each Monday reset; 10 level 80 molds make 1 level 90 mold.
Divine Forge: red special skills
- Red special skills (the game calls them Royal Special Skills) come from forging level 90 gear with the Divine Forge option ticked. Each roll uses a Divine Crystal; creators also count a God Forge Ember and a level 90 mold, so keep all three in stock.
- Pity: 30 rolls guarantee a red skill, but a random one. The skill you picked comes only after two misses, so the worst case is 90 rolls for one slot.
- Red level 1 is barely better than orange level 2. Dazzling Radiance: red 30/40/44% against orange 24/28/32%. Divine Healing: red 38/50/55% against 35% for orange level 2. Keep a good orange skill until you can reach red level 2.
- Divine Crystals: the Starstone shop sells them for 150 each, up to 200 a week; the Clash of the Chosen shop for 200 points each, 5 a week; Siege War gives 5 for 1,200 or more personal points.
- Dismantling Royal gear also gives crystals, and costs Thunderstruck Wood (20 per item, 10 for level 25): level 25 gives 1, level 40 gives 2, level 50 to 57 give 4, level 70 gives 6, level 80 gives 8, level 90 gives 10. Level 70 and 80 pieces also return 4 God Forge Embers.
- In the first SEA week a crystal sold for about 200,000 zeny on the Trade House. The cheapest level 80 Royal gear (about 1.75 million) works out near 216,000 per crystal, so buying crystals is the cheaper route unless gear prices drop.
- Settle your class before you roll. On Taiwan a red skill only follows a class change if your level 90 orange-or-better weapon already carries one, and players who dismantled or swapped red gear lost the skill after clicking past the warning.
How Apocalypse Star works
- Apocalypse is a layer on your gear slots. After a prerequisite quest you activate a slot by consuming orange gear or Royal gear, and the slot gains Apocalypse Attributes and 4 trait slots.
- Starcores drop from Calamity Zone, one type per slot: weapon, off-hand, armor, cloak, shoes and accessory. Each carries 1 to 4 traits from green to red quality. Weapon Starcores also carry class skill traits. Spare Starcores break down into Absorption Crystals for the Stellar Shop, which also sells a purple class-skill Starcore of your choice.
- Each slot absorbs one trait per trait slot, never two of the same type. Stellar Power switches on when all 4 traits share a quality: blue +30%, purple +50%, orange +70%, red +100% to the slot's Apocalypse Attributes. With mixed qualities the lowest one counts.
- The Season 1 attributes are Offensive on weapon and accessory and Defensive on armor, off-hand, cloak and shoes (Break and Guard on Taiwan). At the best grade a trait gives 135 to 200 of either. Inside Calamity Zone their effect is ten times stronger; outside it, Taiwan players measured almost nothing.
- Taiwan Season 1 needed gear of the same type and quality to activate a slot, which made accessories expensive until cheap Apocalypse accessories (80, 120 and 150 Royal Essence) were added. Season 2 changed it: any level 70+ orange or level 40+ Royal item adds tier points to a slot. The SEA notice reads like the newer version, but that is not confirmed.
- Tier points on Taiwan: orange level 70, 80 and 90 give 4, 5 and 8 points; Royal level 40, 55, 70, 80 and 90 give 50, 150, 200, 250 and 400. That is why one Royal piece is worth more than a bag of orange gear, and why we keep Royal level 70+ for Apocalypse rather than the Divine Forge.
- Seasons end. Taiwan's Season 1 lasted about 13 weeks. When Season 2 began, old Break and Guard stopped working in the new Calamity Zone, other Season 1 stats lost 25% every two weeks, and the best old traits turned into a small permanent damage bonus. Treat Starcores as a seasonal investment.
Calamity Zone Season 1: the five bosses
- Parties of 5. Each boss gives rewards 3 times a week (15 in all on Taiwan), and you get 5 revives per run. All five bosses are Large. HP below is the level 90 version from the game files; stronger copies at levels 100 to 130 are also in the files, most likely the higher difficulties.
- Amon Ra (Earth, Demi-Human, 724.5 million HP): Mummy adds are linked by purple bandages, and touching a bandage kills you. Break and Guard: none needed on Normal. The best first boss for a new party.
- Pharaoh (Shadow, Demi-Human, 972 million HP): Scarabs chase a marked player, so keep that arrow away from the group, and use them to break the Coffin web of purple lines that turns you to stone. Normal needs Break 80 and Guard 80.
- Bloody Knight (Shadow, Formless, 1.13 billion HP): link all the spider-lily flowers together and let the green flame burn them; flowers left on the floor hurt the whole party. Normal needs Break 160 and Guard 80.
- Dark Lord (Undead, Demon, 1.51 billion HP): collect green or purple skulls to fill the gauge in his Sloth and Greed phases. Taiwan players call him the easiest: dodge the floor attacks and Guard matters little. Normal needs Break 160 and Guard 160.
- Anubis (Undead, Demi-Human, 1.70 billion HP), the hardest: hide in the corners during the meteor shower, use portals to escape ghost bombs, keep players plus ghosts equal on both sides of the scales, and below 40% HP on Hard the earthquake becomes a pull-in circle. Too much damage too fast stacks mechanics and wipes the party. Normal needs Break 240 and Guard 160; missing the Break costs 40% of your damage.
- Harder difficulties ask much more: about 320 Break and 240 to 320 Guard on Hard, and about 560 on Nightmare. Below the target, Taiwan showed Break under 320 halving your damage and Guard under 240 adding 90% damage taken.
Party, affixes and what wipes groups
- Bring a priest. Sanctuary is the main survival tool, and healers were the class Taiwan parties were short of. Tanks become necessary from Hard upward.
- Boss affixes Taiwan players fear most: a hit that removes 90% of the top-threat player's HP, a healing-reduction debuff stacking to 30, a slow that ends in a full-party freeze, crit resistance (crit builds want about 100 or more to counter it), and element advantage cut from 75% to 25%.
- The Frost affix was considered the easiest pick on Taiwan. Choose affixes for what your party can handle, not for the highest score, since each boss's affixes change every week.
- Build Guard before Break: Taiwan's advice is to activate Apocalypse on orange defensive gear first and step up to Guard 80, then 160, then 240. A dead DPS does no damage.
- Level 90 Royal weapons carry Break of their own on Taiwan: about 125 for a two-hander (plus 50 Guard), 125 for a one-hander, 75 for a dagger, and 50 Guard on a shield.
Cards and traits that counter Season 1
- Every boss is Large, so Minorous Card (weapon, damage vs Large +10.8 to 18%) is the one damage card that works in all five fights. Mirage: Angeling Card (backwear) adds 3.6 to 6% more.
- For defence against all five: Frozen Gargoyle Card (off-hand, damage taken from Large -12 to 20%) and Mirage: Orc Lord Card (headwear).
- Boss-specific weapon cards: Injustice (vs Earth) for Amon Ra, Santa Poring (vs Shadow) for Pharaoh and Bloody Knight, Pecopeco Egg (vs Formless) for Bloody Knight, Strouf (vs Demon) for Dark Lord.
- Boss-specific defence: Thara Frog (off-hand, Demi-Human damage -12 to 20%) for Amon Ra, Pharaoh and Anubis; Khalitzburg (off-hand, Demon -18 to 30%) for Dark Lord; Penomena (off-hand, Formless -18 to 30%) for Bloody Knight; Raydric (cape, Shadow damage -6 to 10%) for Pharaoh and Bloody Knight.
- Three of the five bosses are Demi-Human, and SEA has no card and no Apocalypse trait that adds damage against Demi-Human. Against them your damage comes from size, element and the season attribute, so spend defensive trait slots on Demi-Human damage reduction instead.
- Element: the game's own High Wizard trait confirms that Fire beats Earth, so Fire skills and converters suit Amon Ra. For the Shadow and Undead bosses, Holy is the classic answer in Ragnarok; test it on the first clears before you invest.
- In the trait data, race damage traits (vs Demon, Undead and Formless) roll only on weapon and accessory, element damage traits on the same two slots, and the only size trait is damage taken from Large, on armor.
The Apocalypse weapon trait for every build
- Class traits roll only on weapon Starcores, and the best grade gives the values below. We matched each one to the builds on this site by the skill it boosts.
- Knight and Lord Knight: Sword Saint (sword attacks and skills +42%) for every sword build: 2H AGI Bowling Bash, Hybrid, Traumatic Blow and the Brave Strike tank. Coiled Strike (an extra Clashing Spiral hit every 2.1 seconds) for the Spear build. Kindling Flame only for tanks who live inside Burning Blood.
- Crusader and Paladin: Endless Shield War (more Shield Boomerang and Rapid Smiting hits, damage taken -30% with a shield) for shield tanks; Divine Infusion (Cross skills +30% after 5 Gloria Domini casts) for Grand Cross builds.
- Wizard and High Wizard: Frozen Gale (Storm Gust targets take +30% Wind and Water damage) for Ice and Lightning, Infernal Flames (Fire treats monsters as Earth) for Fire and Earth, Soul Warp for the Ghost build.
- Priest and High Priest: Continuous Heal (Coluseo Heal adds a heal over time) for full support, Swift Exorcism (faster Magnus Exorcismus hits) for Magnus builds, Unstoppable Hammer (ASPD and MSPD +30% after Sanctified Hammer) for battle priests.
- Monk and Champion: Rapid Combo (combo skills +30%) for combo builds and Spiritless Throw Spirit Sphere (no sphere cost, +2 range, +30%) for Flick. No trait boosts Guillotine Fist, so Asura players take Rapid Combo as the closest fit.
- Hunter and Sniper: Swift Arrow Strike (Focused Arrow Strike faster, crit +25%) for ADL, Ruthless Hunt (Blitz Beat can crit) for falconers, Master Enhance (enhanced traps for 6 seconds) for trappers.
- Assassin and Assassin Cross: Napalm Beat (Soul Destroyer hits up to 5 targets, +30%) is the trait creators rate highest of all classes. Enduring Rotation for Rolling Cutter, CRIT Blade for Dancing Knife, Deadly Suppression (Poison +30% against four elements) for Enchant Poison builds such as Fatal Stab.
- Blacksmith and Whitesmith: Ultimate Finale (High Speed Cart Ram +30%) for Cart, Axe Cyclone (axe skills +30%) for Axe Crit, Quick Shot (FAW Silver Sniper ASPD +30%) for the turret build.
- Alchemist and Creator: Limit Throw (Throw skills +30%) for Acid Bomb, Gene Evolution (Create Creature +30%) for homunculus damage.
- Bard, Clown, Dancer and Gypsy: Fortissimo Guard (party skill damage taken -24% with Ensemble Halo) for ensemble support, Peak Rhythm (Solo and Dance skills +30% at 3 Rhythm Notes) for damage builds.
- Rebel and Night Watch: Headshot Armor Break (crits make the target take +30% from you) for crit Gatling builds, Lucky Strike for builds that spend Aim stacks, Echo Shot for Dance Massacre and Massive Magazine for Magazine for One.
- Kanos and Alithea: Frenzy for Werewolf Claw, Benediction Bird Feather (Feather Spear Thrust +30%) for Wereraptor, Swift Incantation (Wrath of Nature cast time -0.3 seconds) for Arcanist.
Mistakes to avoid
- Selling or dismantling orange and Royal gear. Royal level 70 and up is your best Apocalypse feed, and Divine Crystals can be bought.
- Questing at 89 instead of 88, and using Time Corridor runs the day before 88.
- Rolling red skills before your class is settled, or keeping a red level 1 over a good orange level 2.
- Fusing level 80 Royal Essence into level 90 before you know what you will buy with it.
- Refining before the Lucky Refinement Festival.
- Entering Anubis or Bloody Knight under the Break and Guard targets. Start with Amon Ra and Dark Lord while your numbers grow.
- Treating Starcores as permanent. They fade when the next season starts, so spend for the season you are in.
